Over the past few days, several journalists have raised the possibility of the Canadiens selecting Ryan Leonard or David Reinbacher with the 5th pick in the draft. However, as of this morning, Matvei Michkov’s name is increasingly being associated with the Habs by numerous experts.

Indeed, the site HABSolumentFan has unearthed a scoop regarding potential targets for Kent Hughes in the upcoming draft.

In fact, the site managed to get hold of a private conversation that supposedly took place with a Canadiens player. Of course, the identity of the player in question was protected, but the site took the time to verify the authenticity of the account to ensure it was not an imposter. In this conversation, the Habs player expressed his views on who General Manager Kent Hughes would like to draft.

Here is the image in question:

“It depends on who is picked before, but probably Matvei Michkov or Axel Sandin-Pellikka.” – Anonymous Canadiens player

Knowing full well that Kent Hughes has repeatedly mentioned that the best defenseman in the 2023 crop is David Reinbacher, it’s quite interesting to see Axel Sandin-Pellikka’s name in there. Could it be that the Canadiens’ general manager has been bluffing from the start with the aim of hiding his real intentions? It’s very possible.

Moreover, since Matvei Michkov is widely considered one of the best players in the draft, his statements about the contractual situation of the forward might have been a ploy to discourage other teams from selecting him.

It’s hard to know if the player in question received privileged information or if it was simply a prediction, but it’s still very interesting to have his perspective on what will happen in the draft.

We will have to wait until June 28 to get a definitive answer in this case!
